Rashidi Yekini: Nigeria's Greatest Goalscorer of All Time

Born on 23 October 1963 in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, Rashidi Yekini grew up with a single-minded obsession: scoring goals. He began his career with UNTL Kaduna before joining Shooting Stars FC in Ibadan, where he became the most feared striker in the Nigerian league. Yekini's goalscoring exploits in the domestic league were extraordinary — he won the league's top scorer award multiple times and helped Shooting Stars to national titles. On 21 June 1994, in Dallas, Texas, Rashidi Yekini wrote himself into history. Nigeria were making their World Cup debut against Bulgaria, and in the 21st minute, Yekini pounced on a loose ball to score. His celebration — grabbing the net and crying with raw emotion — became one of the most iconic images in World Cup history. That goal meant everything to Nigerian football. It announced the Super Eagles on the world stage. Nigeria went on to beat Bulgaria 3-0 and progressed from the group stage in their very first World Cup appearance, eventually losing to Italy in the Round of 16.
